Affordable Care Act deadline is today (Dec. 15) of new customers

President Obama’s Affordable Care Act will face another test Monday. This time it is more than just making sure the healthcare.gov website is running smoothly.

Dec. 15, is the deadline for new consumers to select a health plan, which will take effect on Jan 1, 2015.  For existing customers, it is the deadline to make changes, which could reduce the expected premium increases ahead of the new year.

The deadline is midnight Monday, Pacific time, This gives consumers on the East coast extra three hours.

The website is expecting heaving traffic, and telephone hold times at the federal call centers has already begun to creep up. The issue is not about technology this time around, but how well the program will work for millions of Americans who are depending on it.

Open enrollment will end Feb. 15, 2015.
